As an utterly unique artist, Sandy Oppenheimer has pushed back the boundaries of landscape and portraiture. She is a painter who works with paper, producing stunning painterly collage compositions. Her portraits are so decorative and alluring that buyers who have never seen the model, seek out the work. Although a maker of images, she begins the process with an intuitive search for harmony and pattern. "My ideas live in my head, but are born from my heart," she says.

Sandy is now doing a series of portraits which operate on another level. She has her subject select those personal items - books, tools, a hat, a cup - which most resonate with meaning in their lives, and the resulting "still life" is as rich a portrait of the subject as any image which might include their face. "Still life" is, however, an inaccurate term as these paper paintings are far from still, although they are without a doubt full of life. "Creating is my way of giving thanks for the privilege of being alive," she says.

Raised in the States, Sandy has an eclectic past which includes frequent moves around the USA and work as a food stylist, potter, masseuse and children's theatre. She began drawing while living in a California tree-house. When she joined her partner, the sculptor John Fisher, in Italy.

13 years ago, she took up a natural role as the social centre for an international community of sculptors. Pursuing her paper painting in a solitary studio, her profound talent and her mastery of texture is an inspiration to the stone carvers around her.
