Last weekend roomsOf.music caught the Gram Parsons Tribute in the Mohave Valley. We were diggin' the hang at the Joshua Tree Saloon, throwin' back a few tequila's, when Jonny Kaplan got up to play. Man, if you wanna take it easy with some rich downhome melody, then you gotta hear Jonny. We nabbed him the minute he stepped off the stage:
Hey Jonny, your music takes us on a trip -- we don't know where, but the the windows are rolled down, and the road is wide open. Well, thanks a lot! I'm pleased to be here with you on your trip!
MOJO compares your work to Gram Parsons, what do you think?Gram has definitely been an influence on me, and it's an honor to be compared to him. I'm not gonna get self-righteous and say, "what about me? what about my sound?" It's American music. It's not new. I'm very proud to be a part of the long line of artists that have given the US's most precious gift to the world...Rock 'N Roll.
When did you first start singing and writing songs?I've been singing and writing songs my whole life. It's what I do.
So how does a guy from Philadelphia wind up making an album called "California Heart?"I've lived here a long time now, but I always had this kind of vision of California when I was a kid; long-haired bikers on chopped Harley's, and cowboys, and stoned, country, hippy rock and roll music, mountains and rivers, riding up the Pacific Coast Hwy with a beautiful blonde hippy girl on the back of my Harley...
Ah, California Dreamin'... Our fav song is "Just To See You Smile," it's melancholy sweet. Do you have a favorite? I don't think so. They're all a part of me, but I am fond of "My Heart," and also, "Disappear," the hidden track, way at the end.
It's like a suprise treat! Okay, before we let you out into the starry desert night, rumor has it you're back in the studio? It seems like I've been working on this second record forever! It'll be in the can by the end of the year, hopefully available early spring. I'll tell you one thing -- it really rocks!!
